Is bloating a sign pregnancy?

Sometimes  bloating  can be difficult to distinguish from pregnancy because they can have similar symptoms.

Many women – depending on whether they are planning a pregnancy or not – become anxious when they develop bloating. However, pregnancy is not the only cause of bloating, and there may be other causes.

Are You Really Experiencing Symptoms of Bloating During Pregnancy?

Are you sexually active, do you doubt the effectiveness of your contraceptives? If so, then you may indeed be pregnant – especially if you have bloating for no apparent reason. However, because bloating can be associated with other conditions, it does not necessarily mean pregnancy. Here are some tips to help you determine if future motherhood is involved:

1. The period of menstruation has passed

2. Lifestyle change

If you think that your missed period really happened, the reason for this may not be pregnancy, but something else.

First of all, think about whether something has changed in your life lately. Have you changed your diet or experienced a lot of stress during the past weeks? Certain foods, stress, lifestyle choices, or hormonal changes can cause a missed cycle or bloating.

3. Take a pregnancy test

If you are still not overly convinced that lifestyle changes are the cause of your missed period and bloating, the best way to determine if you are experiencing early pregnancy symptoms is to take a pregnancy test.

The above symptoms are some of the common signs of early pregnancy. Later, they may be accompanied by morning sickness – the latter usually develops before the ninth week of pregnancy (again, due to an increase in the level of pregnancy hormones).

Keep in mind, however, that this schedule may not work for all women, as some women only begin to experience these symptoms later in pregnancy. Some may not experience any early signs of pregnancy at all – and it’s hard to tell ahead of time which group you might belong to.

Other causes of bloating

If you’ve seen your doctor – and your test results are negative – or if you know you can’t get pregnant, you might still be interested in knowing what caused the bloating.

Other non-pregnancy related factors include:

1. Menstrual cycle

Bloating  before or during menstruation is a common problem in many women, and it occurs due to changes in the levels of the hormones progesterone and estrogen. About a week before the onset of menstruation, there is a decrease in the level of the sex hormone progesterone. This causes the lining of the uterus to flake off, which is then expelled from your body during menstrual bleeding.

If you still feel bloated after your period, see your doctor to make sure your problems are not related to any medical condition.

2. Certain foods and drinks

Food  and drink can also contribute to the development of symptoms of bloating:

  • Legumes : Most beans contain sugars called alpha-galactosides, which belong to the FODMAP group, plus high amounts of fiber, which can cause discomfort and bloating in people with sensitive intestines (especially those who are not used to high fiber intake).
  • Cruciferous vegetables : Vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower also contain FODMAP sugars, which can lead to bloating.
  • carbonated drinks : this type of drink contains a large amount of carbon dioxide, which, entering the digestive system, can cause bloating;
  • Onions and Garlic : Onions are a common cause of bloating due to their soluble fiber (called fructans).
  • Apples : While extremely healthy, these fruits can cause bloating due to their high levels of fructose and fiber.
  • Beer : This is another carbonated beverage that also contains fermented carbohydrates – and this combination of gas and carbohydrates increases the likelihood of bloating.

This, of course, is just a fraction of the foods and drinks that can cause bloating. Since each organism is different, the food and drink mentioned may not be the cause of bloating at all in your case, and some others, on the contrary, may unexpectedly worsen the situation.

If you are trying to find and eliminate such foods, it is recommended that you keep a food diary to help you get the situation under control.

3. Food pace too fast

How to curb bloating

  • eat slowly : as we wrote above, a rapid eating habits lead to swallowing a large amount of air, so try to take your time while eating to reduce the likelihood of bloating;
  • Avoid chewing gum as it causes you to swallow too much air, which can worsen your symptoms.
  • Go for smaller portions : People suffering from bloating are often more sensitive to the amount of food in their stomach, so eating smaller portions can alleviate some of the problems.
  • Take supplements : Taking  probiotics  or digestive enzymes can help you overcome bloating and reduce intestinal gas and other digestive problems.
  • Prevent Constipation : This condition can worsen symptoms of bloating, so make sure you’re drinking enough water, stay active, and are  familiar with other methods of  dealing with constipation.
